{inspiration} I Wish I Knew How It Feels To Be Free.

Cindy and Aunt SusieThe only A+ I ever received for my writing was my big high school research paper. My topic was cancer and I included facts about my aunt—a Franciscan nun, Sister Susan Buckley OSF and her experience with breast cancer. 45 years later, she has been through it all—heart attack, bypass surgery, diabetes, stroke, back surgery, carpel tunnel repair and probably more that she never told me about. Every time she bounced right back, living her spiritual life to the fullest. This final surgery to save her legs was risky and weakened her heart. We lost her today, just after 11:00a.m.—and we pray for her peace. :'(

On a recent visit to my house I asked her what her favorite song was and she told me this story:

On a break after entering the convent at the age of seventeen, she visited my grandparents on the lake. My Papa gave her the keys to the boat, she popped in a John Denver cassette and blasted this song as she speeded by herself all around the lake…she never felt so free.

LYRICS by Billy Taylor

I wish I knew how
It would feel to be free
I wish I could break
All the chains holding me
I wish I could say
All the things that I should say
Say ’em loud say ’em clear
For the whole round world to hear

I wish I could share
All the love that’s in my heart
Remove all the bars
That keep us apart
I wish you could know
What it means to be me
Then you’d see and agree
That every man should be free

I wish I could give
All I’m longin’ to give
I wish I could live
Like I’m longin’ to live
I wish I could do
All the things that I can do
Though I’m way overdue
I’d be starting anew.

Well I wish I could be like a bird in the sky
How sweet it would be
If I found I could fly
I’d soar to the sun
And look down at the sea
And I sing ’cause I know
How it feels to be free

Sister Susan BuckleySusan Buckley’s last words
I am going to go into Love.
God is where life is and I’ll be there.
I love the Spirit.
I want to go on Pentecost.
I have to go.
